A few weeks ago, I entered a contest from the "Destroy All Podcasts DX" podcast. You say what your favorite anime is, and then if you're picked, they send you an anime that is completely different from your favorite (for example, the first person that won was into shojo, so they sent her "Golgo 13", which is very violent and manly). And I was sent "Super Dimension Fortress Macross the Movie: Do You Remember Love?" I had actually listened to a review of this movie and was interested in it, but it's impossible to find since it wasn't released here and my computer would crash every time I played the version I found off bittorrent. And now I have one of the impossible-to-find unedited dvd version (which is obviously a bootleg, but oh well!)

It was awesome. It had all the mecha-anime shonen fighting I was prepared for, but it also had a lot of shojo-esque romance. The visuals were pretty good, espescially since it was an 80s movie. I never saw the Macross series or Robotech (which was 3 different series, Macross being one of them, put together into one), but I was still able to understand enough of the plot to thoroughly enjoy it.

Now I have to bring it to my dad's. He was into Robotech as a kid and was extremely excited when I told him that this was one of the series it was based off of.

you like it when the Chinese mafia kills small children and makes them work in factories (not exactly in that order) so I can get a low quality version of something with bad subtitles? I prefer fansubs: we don't have to pay for those, and it isn't made by the Chinese mafia

... what is bootleg?

bootleg: illegal distribution of something NOT commercially available. This, for example, is a bootleg because it is most likely a copy of the Japanese version that is mass produced and then sold here in the US. The original creators get no money from this. This is different from piracy, which is illegal distribution of something that IS commercially available, and things like fansubs, which are free, so no one gets money. Bootlegs are known (while not proven, as it's most likely the people who can prove it are sleeping with the fishes) to have come from Chinese mobster-types, a menace to society. Bootlegs also usually have a lower quality than the official release, as they usually try to cram as many episodes onto one disc, which lowers quality (not sure how it is with mine, as it's a movie and not episodes). They are also usually much cheaper. I recently found out that my copy of Cowboy Bebop was bootleg (though, more like straight-up piracy since you can get Cowboy Bebop anywhere). A lot of people get them without realizing it while shopping online.

But, nobody cares about morality or laws. Just enjoy your bootleg! If you really feel that bad about it, just send $10.50 to the owners.
